Taigakoira Finnish Lapphunds

LocationMitchell, VIC

Hi, I'm Terri M.

We are a small, selective kennel in Victoria that shows and breeds lovely Finnish Lapphunds. We occasionally have litters available, once or twice a year, usually around 4- 5 puppies per litter. Understandably, we have a lot more inquiries than puppies, which is normal for most Lappie breeders. We do recommend that…

Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

We do not have kennels - our dogs are inside with us and part of our family. Puppies are therefore raised inside with us - there is always someone present (or within earshot!) and are handled every day, multiple times a day. We have both indoor and outdoor areas which are secure and protected, and pups have plenty…

Health

Our puppies are genetically screened to determine their status for conditions that can be detected via genetic testing. We also do ACES testing of litters. Our pups are microchipped and vet checked, and we ask that new owners also do a vet check within 48 hrs of receiving their pup. We have a contractual…

Home environment

Our puppies are raised in a home environment, with us as breeders. We do not have kennels or staff; we only breed occasionally and are small, registered pedigree breeders who are invested in ensuring the future of our breed.

Additional Tests

dna iconGenetic Test

Canine Multifocal Retinopathy (CMR) is a genetic disorder causing local detachment of the retina in young dogs. It does not always cause impaired vision or blindness but can in severe cases. There are three types of CMR affecting different breeds. A DNA test is available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a disease affecting the spinal cord of older dogs, initially causing wobbliness and eventually hindlimb paralysis. It can affect a wide range of breeds. There is now a DNA test that can indicated if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

These breeders have had x-rays taken on their breeding dogs to assess the quality of their elbow joints. Dogs with very low ‘elbow scores’ are less likely to develop elbow problems in the future and less likely to pass hereditary elbow problems on to their puppies.

dna iconGenetic Test

GSD II, or Pompe Disease, is a rare glycogen storage disease that can affect Finnish Lapphunds. It can cause poor growth, muscle weakness, vomiting and heart problems. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in dogs is a type of genetic eye disease causing deterioration of the retina and eventually, blindness. There are a variety of sub-types of PRA, which can occur in various breeds. There are various DNA tests available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
