Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

We invest a lot of time with our babies to ensure their smooth transition into life with our puppy families. We are a homeschooling family so we are constantly with our dogs. Much of our day revolves around our dogs when we have babies (and we call it school!). The wonderful fruit of this is happy-go-lucky, adaptable…

Health

Miniature Schnauzers are a fairly healthy breed but we like to make sure that our breeding dogs are firstly in optimal health and have good genetic match to their mate prior to breeding. The whole genetic picture cannot be known for some of the issues that have been known to plague the breed, but the tools that are…

Home environment

As our dogs are our family members, they all live and sleep in the house with us. Our puppies are born and raised in my bedroom where I can keep a keen eye on them for their first few weeks of life and once they can see, hear and have some control of those legs, then they are transferred to the family living room.…

dna iconGenetic Test

Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a heart disease causing an enlarged heart with stretched heart muscle. Affected dogs are high risk of developing life-threatening heart failure as the abnormal heart cannot beat as effectively. There is a genetic test in some breeds to show if a breeding dog is predisposed to DCM.

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

An eye certificate means the breeder has had their breeding dogs examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist, to confirm they are not affected by any eye conditions which may be passed down genetically to their puppies. If relevant for the breed, it also includes running DNA tests to confirm the dog is not a genetic carrier of hereditary eye diseases, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). It includes breeders who have participated in the Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES).

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a genetic disease that affects a variety of breeds. It causes a blood clotting problem resulting in excessive bleeding. There is a DNA test available to ensure a breeding dog will not pass this condition on their puppies.

dna iconGenetic Test

Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome (MDS) is a condition where a male animal, with normal male genitalia, also possesses a uterus and fallopian tubes. This is caused by an error in development of the reproductive tract in early embryonic development. The condition is often discovered by accident during abdominal surgery. There is a DNA test available to identify if a dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Myotonia Hereditaria/Congenita is a genetic disease that causes muscle problems resulting in a stiff gait and difficulty swallowing. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog might be carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Spondylocostal Dysostosis (SD, or ‘Comma Defect’), is a genetic growth disorder causing spinal and rib malformations. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

About the Breeder

A little about us

Being (somewhat!) obsessed with the breed since 1993 when our family bought our first puppy during a stint in The Netherlands, I've not been without one since. I bought my first Miniature Schnauzer whilst living in the UK, and then another - importing them when I returned home to Perth. I had always dreamt of…

Why we got involved in breeding

When we imported our first Mini back in 1994, my Mum decided to breed her and introduced a new European line into the genetic pool. I was blessed to oversee our very first litter being whelped... and I was hooked.

Our special touch

As exhibitors of this wonderful breed in the show ring, we know all too well the importance of aiming for the Breed Standard (the breed "map", if you will). Improving upon each generation ensures a strong future of success not only in the show ring, but with soundly structured puppies who grow into strong adult dogs.…
