Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

Karyme Havanese pups are raised in my home, in the lounge room. They get used to household noises, other pets, people and being handled. They have a large play area where they are exposed to different surfaces, sounds, tunnels, etc, and these are changed daily. When pups are ready they are introduced to the outside…

Health

I health test to reduce the likelihood of problems. Our adults and pups are checked regularly by our Veterinarian (and our pups come with a health guarantee and a written vet check).

Home environment

All our dogs live as pets - they come and go from the house to the garden as they please, eat and sleep inside, and get individual attention. Puppies are raised inside and used to household activities and routines. They know what it is like to run full pelt around the garden, play with people and other dogs, and (of…

An eye certificate means the breeder has had their breeding dogs examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist, to confirm they are not affected by any eye conditions which may be passed down genetically to their puppies. If relevant for the breed, it also includes running DNA tests to confirm the dog is not a genetic carrier of hereditary eye diseases, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). It includes breeders who have participated in the Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES).

A heart certificate indicates that a breeding dog has been screened for heart disease such as DCM or MMVD. Auscultation alone is only accepted as a screening method if performed by a veterinary cardiologist or a GP vet certifying an OFA Basic Cardiac Screen. Echocardiography is an accepted screening method via GP or cardiologist.

About the Breeder

A little about us

My name is Gail and I am a Havanese exhibitor and breeder (under the prefix 'Karyme'), and all-round dog lover, located in SE NSW. My dogs are part of my family and live in my home, and my puppies are raised with love, care and plenty of one-on-one attention.

Why we got involved in breeding

I started my involvement in the dog world in dog rescue and dog sports. My first dogs were saved from pounds, and they have fun competing in obedience and agility. I was involved with dog rescue in the 2000's, and during this time, devoted much of my life to saving dogs that, through no fault of their own, ended up…

Our special touch

'Karyme' (pronounced CAR eh meh) is a Spanish name meaning 'the attractive one' - a very appropriate name for the gorgeous havanese! (plus a play on words - Havs love to be picked up and cuddled ;-) )

My pups come vaccinated and microchipped, with all appropriate worming and flea treatment. Each owner gets a puppy pack containing Royal Canin dry food, toys, a puppy lead and collar, a clicker (for training!), nail clippers, and various other items (pack contents can sometimes change due to lack of availability). You are given a small crate to take your puppy home in too. If your pup is flying to his/her new home I provide a travel crate and transport to the airport for no charge. I have an extensive set of information sheets (written by me and also by other organisations) that I sent out. These cover setting up for your puppy, training, toilet training, registering the pups microchip, feeding, grooming, etc. I also supply information specific to your needs (for example a guide to introducing a pup to a cat if you have cats already) I provide lifetime support for my pups, and will always take a dog back or help with rehoming if needed. My dogs live a great 'home life' and are part of the family, so you know you are purchasing from an ethical breeder. I health test my dogs, and provide a health guarantee with my pups. I show my dogs too which is part of having them assessed against the breed standard, and ensuring they are the type of dog you are expecting. I match my pups with new owners based on temperament and the needs of their new family. This might mean waiting to find out which pup is yours, but you have the comfort of knowing that the pup's personality will suit your family. I often get feedback from a new family that their pup is exactly what they asked for! I take a refundable deposit for each pup, which can be returned for any reason, including change of mind as I don't believe in locking people into getting a pup that they don't want or doesn't suit them.
