Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

Puppies are raised using both Early Neurological Stimulation practices and Puppy Culture. They are crate and semi-toilet trained before leaving for their new homes. They'll be introduced to shaping and luring exercises as well as loading markers for training. Puppies are safely exposed to a range of different sounds,…

Health

I aim to breed when I can *improve* the breed. I carefully match bitches to studs that have complementary structure and DNA profiles. I avoid breeding carrier to carrier whenever possible. Our bitches are never bred before their 2nd birthday to ensure they're physically mature and all required health testing is…

Home environment

Puppies are born and raised in our home. Our dogs are family members and live and sleep in the house with us. Our dogs are all crate-trained but are never restricted. Newborns enjoy a warm whelping area for their first two weeks of life, after that their living space opens up to a dynamic playground. We provide a…

Additional Tests

Marisala Shetland Sheepdogs conducts 4 additional tests available for the Shetland Sheepdog.

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a disease affecting the spinal cord of older dogs, initially causing wobbliness and eventually hindlimb paralysis. It can affect a wide range of breeds. There is now a DNA test that can indicated if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.

dna iconGenetic Test

The ABCB4 gene has been associated with an increased risk of developing the liver condition Gallbladder Mucocele, in Shetland Sheepdogs. This condition results in the gallbladder becoming distended with mucus and can cause pain, blockages and ruptures in the liver and gallbladder region. There is now a DNA test to identify whether a dog is carrying a mutation in this gene.

dna iconGenetic Test

Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Phosphatase 1 Deficiency (PDP1) is a genetic disease. It causes extreme exhaustion after exercise. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Von Willebrand’s Disease (VWD/vWD) is a genetic bleeding disorder caused by a lack of a specific clotting factor. There are three forms of the disease, types 1, 2 & 3. A DNA test is available for each type of VWD to identify whether a breeding dog is a carrier or might be affected. The severity of VWD varies widely between breeds and individuals, ranging from life threatening, through to having no impact on clotting ability.

Why we got involved in breeding

For the love of the Shetland Sheepdog. I was a dog trainer who got into dog sports, which led to showing. It was in the show ring that I cemented the decision to breed these incredible little dogs :)

Our special touch

I am a forever learner and a perfectionist. I want to learn all I possibly can to improve the breed with every litter. I work with fellow ethical Sheltie breeders, sharing knowledge and improving as a community.
