Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

Puppies are born and raised inside the home around us and our other dogs. We use Puppy Culture protocols and they receive ENS (early neurological stimulation). Early socialisation with lots of handling, enrichment & desensitising to noises

Health

We fully DNA test all our breeding dogs. An opthamologist checks their eyes and our vet tests their heart and qualifies them healthy for breeding. We feed basically raw with a good range of different proteins, pups are weaned on this as well as Lyka and Advance kibble.

Home environment

We live around 13km out of town in a rural setting, on which we have an extensive front veranda where our girls whelp with their babies. We give all our dogs free run of the house through an open doggy door, allowing them to come and go as they please. We have lots of space outdoors and we have a huge puppy play…

Health Tests

Core Tests(1/1)

Patellar Luxation

Additional Tests

The Spaniel Project Tibetan Spaniels conducts 4 additional tests available for the Tibetan Spaniel.

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a disease affecting the spinal cord of older dogs, initially causing wobbliness and eventually hindlimb paralysis. It can affect a wide range of breeds. There is now a DNA test that can indicated if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

An eye certificate means the breeder has had their breeding dogs examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist, to confirm they are not affected by any eye conditions which may be passed down genetically to their puppies. If relevant for the breed, it also includes running DNA tests to confirm the dog is not a genetic carrier of hereditary eye diseases, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). It includes breeders who have participated in the Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES).

dna iconGenetic Test

Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) is a genetic cause of blindness found in dogs, particularly affecting terrier breeds. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in dogs is a type of genetic eye disease causing deterioration of the retina and eventually, blindness. There are a variety of sub-types of PRA, which can occur in various breeds. There are various DNA tests available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

About the Breeder

A little about us

I’m Hellen, originally from Holland, I moved to Australia around 40 years ago and now retired - dogs are my life!

Why we got involved in breeding

I originally started out breeding Bandogs (Neapolitan Mastiffs X) so big dogs, as I matured and realised my limitations associated with this I moved over to breeding smaller dogs. I set out extensively researching the different Spaniel breeds and found a group of like-minded people and mentors, who set out to breed…

Our special touch

We feel that our breed is particularly unique in characteristics, intelligence and beautiful coat. By outcrossing the CKCS to the Tibetan Spaniel I believe we are well on our way to eliminate some of the more serious diseases that plague the CKCS. Still in the early stages, however the dogs produced sofar do not…
