Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

Our dogs are first and foremost our pets and live in our home with us. Puppies are raised in the middle of our lounge room and enjoy playing with our grandchildren and our British Shorthair cat. They are used to all the noise and hustle and bustle of a busy household. They are bathed, groomed and have their nails…

Health

All our dogs are extremely healthy. They are regularly wormed and treated for fleas and ticks. We spend quite a bit of time each day grooming all our dogs to ensure their coats and skin remains luxurious. Ears, eyes, nails and feet maintenance are part of our grooming routine. The dogs are bathed weekly. They are fed…

Home environment

Our puppies are the centre of our attention. We purposely raise them right in the middle of the house so they get to see everything that is going on and receive constant interaction from all the members of our household. They are handled and cuddled multiple times throughout the day and are given individual attention…

Included with our puppies

All puppies will leave us after being wormed every two weeks from birth, been checked by our vet and come with a written health report, have had a C3 and a C2i vaccination, are microchipped, and have a written health contract from us. They also come with a very extensive puppy pack containing collar, lead, toys,…

Additional Tests

Beljala Kennels conducts 4 additional tests available for the Havanese.

dna iconGenetic Test

Canine Multifocal Retinopathy (CMR) is a genetic disorder causing local detachment of the retina in young dogs. It does not always cause impaired vision or blindness but can in severe cases. There are three types of CMR affecting different breeds. A DNA test is available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a disease affecting the spinal cord of older dogs, initially causing wobbliness and eventually hindlimb paralysis. It can affect a wide range of breeds. There is now a DNA test that can indicated if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

An eye certificate means the breeder has had their breeding dogs examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist, to confirm they are not affected by any eye conditions which may be passed down genetically to their puppies. If relevant for the breed, it also includes running DNA tests to confirm the dog is not a genetic carrier of hereditary eye diseases, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). It includes breeders who have participated in the Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES).

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

A heart certificate indicates that a breeding dog has been screened for heart disease such as DCM or MMVD. Auscultation alone is only accepted as a screening method if performed by a veterinary cardiologist or a GP vet certifying an OFA Basic Cardiac Screen. Echocardiography is an accepted screening method via GP or cardiologist.

About the Breeder

A little about us

My name is Alanna. My husband James and I have been involved in dogs and have been members of Dogs NSW since 1979. For the last 10 years we have been lovers, exhibitors, and breeders of Havanese. We have been involved in showing and breeding dogs for over 40 years. We purchased our first show dog in 1979. Over…

Why we got involved in breeding

We initially became involved in showing Border Collies in late 1979 / 1980 when we bought Princess, a lovely girl with registration papers. Princess was meant to be primarily our pet and a much loved member of our family but we decided to show her to see what showing was like and we soon got bitten by the bug. After…

Our special touch

Since our children have grown and left home and we are both now retired from work, we have dedicated ourselves to our beautiful Havanese. Beljala Kennels is very much our way of life. Our kennel prefix “Beljala” is made up of my husband’s and my name. “Bel” for our surname, Bell. “J” for the beginning of my…

A very healthy, well socialised puppy. All puppies will leave us after being wormed every two weeks from birth, been checked by our vet and come with a written health report, have had a C3 and a C2i vaccination, are microchipped, and have a written health contract from us. They also come with a very extensive puppy pack containing collar, lead, toys, blanket, towel, brush, comb, nail clippers, shampoo, conditioner, detangling spray, food and water bowls, poo scoop, clean up bags, puppy training pads, a piece of dry bed, at least a week’s supply of food and a carry crate to take them home in. I provide detailed information in a folder that I compiled myself with tips about raising your puppy, a welfare tracker, 6 weeks free health insurance and lifetime support from us! We are only a phone call or text message away. New Beljala puppy owners are encouraged to join our Facebook group and are supported by fellow Beljala Havanese owners. I register all pups on Limited Register with Dogs NSW (not for showing, breeding or export). The puppy’s pedigree is included in these papers. We ask buyers to sign an agreement that they will have their puppy desexed.
