Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

We have 4 daughters so our pups are well handled day in, day out. They are dressed up, cuddled and sung too. We play music for them, have paddling pools for them and let them run wild for hours each day. A HSHD puppy is a happy puppy.

Health

All our breeding dogs are DNA tested and clear of any affecting conditions. These pups have a very balanced diet, three times a day after weaning. They are wormed and vaccinated and come microchipped as well.

Home environment

We live on a farm outside of Northampton. Our pups are kept inside at all times while they’re little and with mummy. When they’re weaned, we begin taking them outside for longer periods of time. They have endless grasses areas to chew toys, sticks and play. They come inside in the evening and have their supper and…

Included with our puppies

Every HSHD puppy comes with their worming and vaccinations up to date. They are microchipped. We have a fairly over the top puppy pack which includes essentials such as potty training trays, leads, bowls, treats, toys and a blanket…. Bit spoilt!

Mucopolysaccharidosis is a genetic lysosomal storage disease that can cause various problems including stunted growth and bone deformities. There are a few different variants of this disease that have been identified in different breeds. For many breeds there are DNA tests available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying the condition.

Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a neurodegenerative disorder found in many breeds of dog. 7 varieties have been identified so far, affecting different breeds. There are DNA tests for each type, to identify whether a breeding dog might be carrying this condition.

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), also known as ‘brittle bone disease’, is an inherited disease in both humans and animals, causing bone fragility and fracturing. As it is a genetic disease, breeding parents can be tested to ensure it is not passed onto their puppies.

Why we got involved in breeding

My love for miniature dachshunds runs deep—there’s just something magical about their short legs, long bodies, cheeky personalities, and big, confident hearts. They are the perfect family pets, and with so many beautiful colors, it’s impossible to have just one! Growing up on our family farm, I was surrounded by…

Our special touch

At Hope Springs Hot Dogs, we do things a little differently. Our dachshunds aren’t raised in suburbia, kennels, or sheds—they grow up on the farm, living the adventurous life they were meant for. From digging “badger” holes to exploring the creek, riding in the farm Ute checking cattle, and running free, our puppies…
