Our Breeding Practices
Behaviour and socialisation
All puppies bred by MacTrim are raised inside in our family environment. They commence toilet training and crate training whilst puppies and are also outside on the farm.
Health
Both sire and dam of puppies undergo a range of health testing. Health testing for MacTrim studs and bitches is extensive. All puppies are parentage and health tested through DNA typing. As members of Dogs Queensland, we are bound by their Code of Practice for Breeders. We also adhere to the Great Dane breed standard…
Home environment
Our homestead is situated on forty acres which is also a horse breeding establishment. An adult is always at home with the puppies. There are no children in the household. All of our Danes live and play together.
Included with our puppies
* All puppies bred by MacTrim Great Danes are sold with Australian National Kennel Council Limited (ANKC) registration certificates and will be transferred into the new owner's name. Pet puppies are on the Limited Register and cannot be used for breeding and/or showing and are not able to be exported from Australia.…
Health Tests
Core Tests(1/1)
MacTrim Great Danes conducts 1 out of 1 core health tests which RightPaw believe are most important to conduct for the Great Dane.
Hip Dysplasia
Physical Test
These breeders have had x-rays taken on their breeding dogs to assess their ‘hip score’. Dogs with…

Additional Tests
MacTrim Great Danes conducts 5 additional tests available for the Great Dane.
Physical Test
This is a type of hypothyroidism which can occur in any breed and can be caused by many different things. It is more common in some breeds compared to others, so in these breeds it is recommended that breeding dogs have a blood test to show they have normal thyroid levels at the time of breeding.
Physical Test
These breeders have had x-rays taken on their breeding dogs to assess the quality of their elbow joints. Dogs with very low ‘elbow scores’ are less likely to develop elbow problems in the future and less likely to pass hereditary elbow problems on to their puppies.
Genetic Test
This is a serious genetic skin disease that causes flaky dry skin and footpad problems. It can occur in many breeds but is fairly common in Golden Retrievers. There is a DNA test to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this disease and could pass it on to their puppies.
Genetic Test
Leukoencephalomyelopathy (LEMP) is a genetic neuromuscular disease. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
Genetic Test
Mucopolysaccharidosis is a genetic lysosomal storage disease that can cause various problems including stunted growth and bone deformities. There are a few different variants of this disease that have been identified in different breeds. For many breeds there are DNA tests available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying the condition.

Why we got involved in breeding
We have been involved with Great Danes since 2003. We love the breed and what they have to offer. We wanted to breed our ideal Great Dane for our family and we're looking at commencing showing our Great Danes which we have bred.
