Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

We follow the principles of Badass Breeder when raising our pups. Not surprisingly, it is very similar to what I learnt during the early training of an Assistance Dog. The first 16 weeks of age is a crucial time for shaping a puppy into the type of dog we want. What they learn at this stage stays with them for the…

Health

The socio-emotional and physical health of our puppies is extremely important to us. We only breed from confident, calm, friendly dogs that have loving temperaments. Our puppies are wormed every two weeks and vaccinated at their 6-week (C3) vet check. All our breeding dogs have had their Hips and Elbows scored,…

Home environment

Our puppies are all raised in our home. Mum and her pups spend their first 2.5-3 weeks in a quiet bedroom. This gives mum time to quietly bond with her pups, and enables me to monitor the pups very closely during this critical time in their lives. Their environment is temperature controlled because very young pups…

Additional Tests

dna iconGenetic Test

Canine Elliptocytosis is a rare genetic disease causing the red blood cells to be abnormally elliptical in shape, rather than round. It generally does not cause a clinical problem to affected dogs, but puppies may be mildly anaemic and smaller than others. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.

dna iconGenetic Test

Congenital eye malformations in Golden Retrievers result from a mutation of the SIX6 gene. These malformations can present as a range of different eye conditions, ranging from poor vision to blindness in one or both eyes. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying the affected gene.

dna iconGenetic Test

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) is a congenital skin disease that causes fragile skin, blisters, ulceration, and skin scarring. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a disease affecting the spinal cord of older dogs, initially causing wobbliness and eventually hindlimb paralysis. It can affect a wide range of breeds. There is now a DNA test that can indicated if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.

dna iconGenetic Test

GM2 gangliosidosis is a lysosomal storage disorder that causes neurological problems. There are a few different types of this disease affecting different breeds. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a serious genetic skin disease that causes flaky dry skin and footpad problems. It can occur in many breeds but is fairly common in Golden Retrievers. There is a DNA test to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this disease and could pass it on to their puppies.

dna iconGenetic Test

Mucopolysaccharidosis is a genetic lysosomal storage disease that can cause various problems including stunted growth and bone deformities. There are a few different variants of this disease that have been identified in different breeds. For many breeds there are DNA tests available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying the condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) is a neurodegenerative disorder found in many breeds of dog. 7 varieties have been identified so far, affecting different breeds. There are DNA tests for each type, to identify whether a breeding dog might be carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Neonatal Encephalopathy (NE) is a brain disease that can occur in Standard Poodle puppies. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Osteochondrodysplasias are a group of rare genetic diseases that cause problems with connective tissue, cartilage, or bone development. They commonly cause dwarfism and movement disorders. There is a DNA test available in some breeds to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), also known as ‘brittle bone disease’, is an inherited disease in both humans and animals, causing bone fragility and fracturing. As it is a genetic disease, breeding parents can be tested to ensure it is not passed onto their puppies.

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

Dogs affected by patellar luxation have loose kneecaps that may pop in and out of the knee joint, which can be painful and even require surgery. Having a vet examine breeding dogs for patellar luxation can confirm the dog is not affected, and that their puppies are less likely to develop the condition. Patellar luxation is more common in smaller breeds.

dna iconGenetic Test

Von Willebrand’s Disease (VWD/vWD) is a genetic bleeding disorder caused by a lack of a specific clotting factor. There are three forms of the disease, types 1, 2 & 3. A DNA test is available for each type of VWD to identify whether a breeding dog is a carrier or might be affected. The severity of VWD varies widely between breeds and individuals, ranging from life threatening, through to having no impact on clotting ability.

Why we got involved in breeding

I was involved in breeding and showing Persian cats & Pekingnese with my family when I was younger, but the defining moment and decision to breed Oodles came after I raised one as an assistance dog for Assistance Dogs Australia whilst studying towards becoming a schoolteacher in a late career change. This was…

Our special touch

Our “special touch” is our heartfelt desire to use our Alimay Oodles business to not only support the therapy and assistance dog ecosystem, but also to run it like a NPO to enable us to develop our acreage setting into a “safe space” for social connection, learning activities and respite for autistic kids and their…
