Our Breeding Practices
Behaviour and socialisation
The pups are socialised by our family, our guests and our dogs, including their mother, father, big sister, aunties and our 2 big French Mastiff, who love puppies and acts as their surrogate mother! They grow up hearing normal household noises (vacuum, TV, washing machine, etc), as well as see farm life: chicken,…
Health
The pups parents have been hip and elbow xray-ed and are genetically DNA tested for all relevant, testable diseases, so pups cannot get affected of any of them, including PRA-prcd (blinding eye disease), FN (deadly kidney disease), AON (nerve disease) or AMS (Acral Mutilation Syndrome). They also have had clinical…
Home environment
The pups are born in a quiet fenced off corner in the lounge room, by the fireplace. When they grow and start to make a mess they get access to a secure outdoor pen to see the outdoors and to start to learn toilet training. They are also “moved around” now and then: they get to have snuggles on the lounge, go visit…
Included with our puppies
Our pups get an extensive puppy pack, which naturally consists of: - Written instructions - Vaccination and microchip papers - ANKC Registration papers (Main, so you can compete if you want, but not or breeding) - 6 week free Pet insurance - A bag of Royal Canin Puppy food (and discount coupons for another 2 bags) -…

Additional Tests
Bonningdale Cocker Spaniels conducts 7 additional tests available for the Cocker Spaniel.
Genetic Test
Acral Mutilation Syndrome (AMS) is a genetic disease that causes affected dogs to compulsively lick, overgroom and bite their paws. This can cause recurrent injuries and infections. The condition can be extreme and even result in the dog being euthanised if the signs cannot be controlled.
Genetic Test
This is a rare genetic disease affecting Cocker Spaniels. It can cause wobbliness and incoordination in the hindlimbs, with eventual progression to paralysis and difficulty breathing. It usually only affects older dogs and progression is slow over several years. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
Genetic Test
Bernard-Soulier Syndrome (BSS) is a genetic bleeding disorder caused by abnormally large platelets in low numbers, meaning an affected animal cannot form clots properly after tissue damage. It can lead to life-threatening bleeding issues following surgery or injury. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
Genetic Test
Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) is a genetic condition mainly affecting Retrievers and Spaniels. It results in the dog collapsing after periods of intense exercise, even if they are normally able to cope with lower levels of exercise. There is a DNA test available which can indicate if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.
Physical Test
These breeders have had x-rays taken on their breeding dogs to assess the quality of their elbow joints. Dogs with very low ‘elbow scores’ are less likely to develop elbow problems in the future and less likely to pass hereditary elbow problems on to their puppies.
Physical Test
An eye certificate means the breeder has had their breeding dogs examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist, to confirm they are not affected by any eye conditions which may be passed down genetically to their puppies. If relevant for the breed, it also includes running DNA tests to confirm the dog is not a genetic carrier of hereditary eye diseases, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). It includes breeders who have participated in the Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES).
Genetic Test
Canine Phosphofructokinase (PFK) Deficiency is a genetic disease resulting in low levels of the PFK enzyme. It can result in extreme muscle fatigue, muscle cramping and severe anaemia. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
