Our Breeding Practices

Behaviour and socialisation

Puppies have very little fear during their first weeks, so new experiences are approached with curiosity. In order to capitalise on this, we introduce various objects, locations, and experiences that they may encounter from the very begining and always in positive ways. This teaches puppies to approach new…

Health

Our dogs and puppies are our number one priority and we ensure that their health and happiness always comes first. All our dogs have a full DNA profile and undergo comprehensive genetic testing to screen for any possible genetic defects or traits.

Home environment

Our puppies are raised inside our family home and constantly receive lots of love and attention from our whole family. All our dogs are very much part of our family and daily lives and have free run of our home and yard.

Additional Tests

Darklotos Rottweilers conducts 5 additional tests available for the Rottweiler.

dna iconGenetic Test

This is a disease affecting the spinal cord of older dogs, initially causing wobbliness and eventually hindlimb paralysis. It can affect a wide range of breeds. There is now a DNA test that can indicated if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

An eye certificate means the breeder has had their breeding dogs examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist, to confirm they are not affected by any eye conditions which may be passed down genetically to their puppies. If relevant for the breed, it also includes running DNA tests to confirm the dog is not a genetic carrier of hereditary eye diseases, such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). It includes breeders who have participated in the Australian Canine Eye Scheme (ACES).

stethoscope iconPhysical Test

A mouth certificate indicates the dog has had its teeth examined for any missing or misaligned teeth and that its bite is correct. Dogs with overshot, undershot or misaligned jaws should not be bred. A poor bite or jaw problems can lead to more dental disease, ulcers, palate and lip problems.

dna iconGenetic Test

X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM) is an inherited muscle disease causing severe, progressive muscle atrophy in puppies. Affected puppies are small and lack coordination. Within weeks, the puppies may have difficulty holding their head up or standing and may collapse after exertion. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog might be carrying this condition.

dna iconGenetic Test

Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (NAD) is a degenerative neurological disease that has been identified in a few breeds. Gradual degeneration of nerve cells causes uncoordinated movement, a strange gait and other neurological signs. Puppies can be born with the condition or older dogs can develop it later in life. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

About the Breeder

A little about us

I have been involved in the fantastic world of rottweilers for many years now and enjoy training and showing all our dogs.

Why we got involved in breeding

After many years of training and showing rottweilers, I felt that through my experience and research I was ready to share my knowledge and love of the breed with others. We take our responsibility as breeders very seriously and continually strive to protect and improve our wonderful breed.
