Genetic Test
This is a disease affecting the spinal cord of older dogs, initially causing wobbliness and eventually hindlimb paralysis. It can affect a wide range of breeds. There is now a DNA test that can indicated if a breeding dog is carrying this disease.
Genetic Test
Hereditary Footpad Hyperkeratosis (HFH) is a genetic condition of Irish Terriers that causes thickening and hardening of their footpads, forming painful corns. There is a DNA test now available to indicate whether a breeding dog is carrying this disease. This test can be run on puppies as well.
Genetic Test
Leukoencephalomyelopathy (LEMP) is a genetic neuromuscular disease. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
Genetic Test
X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM) is an inherited muscle disease causing severe, progressive muscle atrophy in puppies. Affected puppies are small and lack coordination. Within weeks, the puppies may have difficulty holding their head up or standing and may collapse after exertion. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog might be carrying this condition.
Genetic Test
Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (NAD) is a degenerative neurological disease that has been identified in a few breeds. Gradual degeneration of nerve cells causes uncoordinated movement, a strange gait and other neurological signs. Puppies can be born with the condition or older dogs can develop it later in life. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
